What does it take to become an ultra-runner?
We think anybody can become an ultra-runner if you put your mind to it. There are many different areas that require special attention. And quite often these areas depend on each other. When one of them is off balance then also some other area tends to be off balance.
Ultra-running demands naturally a significant amount of physical training. You also need to consider recovering your body from the stress caused by the training. Nutrition is another important area.
What does it take to train a significant amount year after year? You would probably need to like what you do. Or in fact, you would need to love what you do. You need to have the motivation to strive through the difficult phases. Every experience is a lesson that makes you stronger; you just need to be wise enough to recognize the lesson. You need to find the things that motivate you whether it’s racing or training with your team or just simply running. You need to love running.
It is important to know yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, have a strong mind, and be able to endure some pain. You need to have passion.
